Meeting Frankful's sustainable food packaging needs

A BIOPAK CUSTOMER STORY

In 2022 Swedish consumer goods supplier Orkla opened a restaurant, Frankful Shop & Restaurant, located in the same building as their central headquarters and innovation kitchen. The choice of location was based on the idea that the restaurant would become an innovation hub, focusing predominantly on sustainability and the "food of the future".

Sustainable packaging materials: a simple choice

Like Duni Group and BioPak, Orkla Foods focuses on sustainability throughout its entire organisation. When looking for a supplier who would match their ideals on sustainable food packaging, the product range of choice was simple – BioPak. Malin Henriksson, Head Chef, explains:

"Serving our food in sustainable packaging is very important to us. It goes in line with our entire business and everything we do."

"They should be made from renewable materials, and also fulfil more practical requirements, such as withstanding moisture and fat and keeping food fresh. BioPak’s packaging fulfils this, which is part of the reason we chose them."

Take-away packaging for any and every dish

Frankful Shop & Restaurant has quickly become a popular breakfast and lunch attraction, located in a business neighbourhood, right by the sea in southern Sweden. Each day, customers line up to choose their treats from the menu which changes every week and consists of vegetarian dishes in different types of bowls, soups and wraps – all available for takeaway or eating in. An important benefit of their use of BioPak packaging is that it does not limit the selection of dishes they want to offer.

"I believe in choosing packs based on each dish."

"For example, we need to be able to get a box in several different sizes, as we always have different-sized dishes on the menu. Therefore, a wide range is important to us. We don’t want to use one or only a few packs for all dishes, but would rather believe in choosing packs based on each individual dish. Otherwise, it is easy to compromise and adapt the dish to the packaging. You may overportion to fill a box that is too big, or vice versa, the portion becomes smaller than intended when the box is too small."

Flexible food solutions - and services

Finding the right product across the board can be a challenge for many, which is why Malin Henriksson and Orkla continues to choose BioPak packaging for their dishes. Malin explains that Duni always offers the support needed to find the perfect products:

"Communication is very important and we have a dedicated salesperson who is always just a phone call away. The co-operation works really well and we get a lot of help from the salesperson. When I set a new menu, we can look at it together and they give me recommendations on which packaging would be most suitable. We have never failed to find a suitable box."

"Flexibility is another factor we look for in a supplier. We often work with on large catering events, such as the other day when we received a corporate order for 320 dishes to be delivered within a very short deadline. If we didn’t have enough boxes, we would have had to order new ones and have them delivered quickly. This is usually not a problem for BioPak."

3 Questions to Malin

1. What is the best thing about BioPak products?

"That they are available in many different designs. Ronda is perfect for soups and salads and you can choose between cardboard or RPET lids. They also match nicely with the boxes and have an excellent fit. Clambox is another favourite of mine. It beautifully presents the food and we usually have them on our deli counter with the lid open, so our customers can see the food before they buy it. We also use the Classic Round made of bagasse. It has a transparent lid which is both practical and aesthetically pleasing."

2. Name a packaging-sensitive challenge.

"We make our dressings 2-3 days in advance, which means that they can sit for a while, so the packaging has to hold both moisture and fat and ensure it doesn’t penetrate the material and leak. BioPak’s dressing cups do this job well."

3. What is most important when it comes to a supplier?

"Cooperation. It must be smooth. For various reasons, which we can’t always influence ourselves, we are often late in order – but with BioPak it always works out. Another thing that is important to us is the estimated delivery time. Our salesperson always lets us know when our products will be delivered, and that helps us in our planning."
